During this epoch of rising health care costs and health problems, many people are seeking asylum in the form of preventative practices. A popular idea is to consume a product on a daily basis that will provide the body with all of its required nutrients.
Two heavyweights in the crown for best nutritional supplements are multivitamins and super greens supplements in powdered form. While one may be a cheaper option, I do believe the other is the clear champion in this battle for superior nutritional value.
In this article, I’ll explain why I believe green superfood powders are the best option and why multivitamins may provide minimal to negligible benefit. I’ve made this determination many years ago. Hence, a morning doesn’t pass without me having a teaspoon of green powder.
Before deciding upon using a green powder or a multivitamin it is important to understand the structure and the role of the immune system. Our dietary habits have a direct effect on the efficiency of our immune systems.
The body requires a certain amount of nutrients on a daily basis. However, certain environmental and industrial conditions and dietary habits have rendered this task difficult for most people. As a result, there has been a huge growth for products such a multivitamin or a super greens supplement.
What are green powders?
Greens powders are a blend of many different greens, herbs, spices, and superfoods; thus they contain tons of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. They can be a means of implementing superfoods, such as wheatgrass, kelp, and various probiotics, into your daily diet.
The manufacturing of the powders can be viewed in three steps:
- The ingredients are sourced and delivered.
- The ingredients are condensed into a powder or extract.
- The ingredients are bottled and stored in a facility until they’re ordered by the customer.
These powders can be mixed with water or included in a smoothie. Many people, including myself, use them a meal replacement. I’ll mix them into a Vitamix with other ingredients into a breakfast green drink.
Structure of the Immune System
A body’s immune system is a dynamic unit consisting of various organs, proteins, cells, and tissues that serves as a defensive mechanism against harmful invaders. Pathogens such as viruses, bacteria, parasites, and fungi can wreak havoc on the body if left undetected and unhindered.
The immune system possesses many barriers against invasion such as the skin, enzymes in saliva and nose hairs, and stomach gastric acid. Discharge of fluids via tears, sweat, and urine serves as removal of toxins.
The various organs and blood vessels associated with the immune system comprise the lymphatic system. White blood cells are the solders created by this system to fight the hostile foreign invaders.
The organs comprising the lymphatic system as follows: lymph nodes, blood vessels, the spleen, the thymus, adenoids, tonsils, and bone marrow. The blood vessels carry the white blood cells throughout the body, while the various organs serve as filters of toxins and harmful foreign bodies.
Cells created in the bone marrow become B cells, while cells created in the thymus become T cells. Both groups of cells have a designated role in attacking harmful invaders. B cells are key elements in the process of creating antibodies that go to battle at the site of infection. B cells circulate throughout the bloodstream but cannot enter living tissue.
T Cells destroy other cells that have been contaminated or damaged by pathogens. Also, T cells regulate the immune responses performed by the other cells in the body. They help determine the appropriate response to the various pathogens in the body.
These are the key players in the immune system.
Antioxidants – The Body’s Champion Against Free Radicals.
Besides invaders such as viruses, parasites, fungi, and bacteria – there exists another enemy of the immune system – namely, free radicals. We need oxygen to live however at the same it causes cellular damage in the body. A molecule negatively affected by oxygen becomes a free radical. An antioxidant is a substance that mitigates this damage.
Free radical damage contributes to every type of health ailment, including heart disease and cancer. Immune cells depend on the fluidity of cell membranes. Free radicals reduce this fluidity; thus preventing these cells from performing their assigned tasks.
Here is another avenue where proper nutrition becomes crucial to your health. Fresh fruits and vegetables are rich in antioxidants. Hence, here is the main advantage of green powders as they consist primarily of these foods. Moreover, antioxidants work more efficiently when combined with other antioxidants containing complementary nutrients. Now, you should be able to understand why a smoothie containing a green powder mix can such a powerful, healthy drink.
The Need for Nutritional Supplementation
Check out this article for full expose regarding the importance of nutrition and a breakdown of the various vitamins and minerals. Moreover, the article possesses a breakdown of the effects of a deficiency in these nutrients.
Ideally, a person consumes their vitamins and minerals from the food in their diet. However, this goal has become difficult in modern society. Poor dieting practices, poor soil, processed food, and a monopoly on the food supply by companies such as Monsanto have contributed to an epidemic of nutritional deficiency.
Hence, nutritional supplementation has become a huge industry. Moreover, an understanding of the causes of a comprised food supply could help someone determine the value of using supplementation.
There are many factors that have contributed to the soil becoming comprised over the past century. Research by Rick Haney of the US Department of Agriculture has focused on the topic of fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, and any other related chemical.
These chemicals have killed nutrients, essential bacteria, and other essential organic matter. There are slim profit margins in the farming industry so farmers have become reluctant to apply organic techniques. The prevailing notion over the past century has been the use of fertilizers is a necessity in order to achieve profits.
Haney described modern practices as chemotherapy for soil. For example, these chemicals destroy the good bacteria and fungi in addition to the harmful ones. Farming practices have become infected with the modern mentality of instant gratification.
Such issues as the use of fertilizers and pesticides is a reason why I endorse the use of green powder supplements. From what I’ve seen, most of these items source foods grown from organic practices. In fact, Health Force International, manufacturer of Vitamineral Green, goes beyond the standard organic methods.
Generally, Processed Foods are laced with white sugar and filled with harmful additives and preservatives. These items contribute to many health condition and food cravings.
For example, white sugar is heavy in calories while providing no health benefits. In reality, many nutritionists and researchers consider sugar a toxic poison. Personally, I’ve experienced better health after eliminating a soda addiction.
Processed foods have become prevalent due to their convenience and ability to be mass-produced. International conglomerates have taken over the every industry, including the food industry. I find it odd these multi-national corporations, which have nothing to do with a true free market, haven’t been considered monopolies by the mass media. Well, perhaps the reason is obvious when you consider the owners of the mass media.
An article by the Laborer’s Health & Safety Fund of North America published an article in May 2019 that provided a concise list of health risks caused by processed foods.
1. Increased cancer risk
2. High in sugar, sodium, and fat – contributes to obesity, heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes.
3. Minimal if any nutritional value
4. As mentioned above, these foods are high in calories and addicting. Who hasn’t devoured a bag of potato chips in one sitting? Frankly, it’s still an issue that plagues me. It’s an issue that could prompt someone to label me a not so much Health Jim.
5. Quicker to Digest – This was a finding that I found interesting. The fact that processed foods are digested at a quicker rate means the body spends less energy during the process; hence, a person gains more weight.
6. Again, these foods are filled with artificial ingredients. There are approximately 5,000 different food additives, many of which haven’t been properly researched and tested.
Again, these problems can be avoided using green powder mixes due to their methods of food sourcing. Moreover, the typical multi-vitamin pill is processed in many of the same ways as processed food.
Concentration and Power in the Food System: Who Controls What We Eat? (Contemporary Food Studies: Economy, Culture and Politics) was a 216-page book published by Michigan State professor Philip H. Howard.
The key point derived from Professor Howard’s study is that four firms control 40% of the market at every stage of food production: including seeds, supermarkets, processing, and manufacturing. Their control has contributed to the many environmental and health problems created by the modern food industry.
Many alliances and acquisitions have caused an elite group of conglomerates to extort hegemony over all aspects of the food industry.
Here is a list of the primary hubs within the food industry:
- Perdue Farms
- Jab Holding Company
- Miller Coors
- Snyder’s- Lance
- Flower Foods
- Foster Farms
- J&J Snack Foods
- Campbell Soup Co.
- Hain Celestial
- White Wave
- Bimbo Bakers
- B&G Foods
- General Mills
- Treehouse Foods
- M&M Mars
- Pinnacle Foods
- Post Foods
- Hershey Foods
- Cropp (Organic Valley)
- AB InBev
- J.M. Smucker
Companies that manufacture green powder supplements generally grow and produce their own fruits and vegetables while using organic farming techniques. Moreover, they tend to avoid using GMO seeds from Monsanto. Meanwhile, the standard multi-vitamin product be will be completely produced within the confines of the food industry’s ruling hierarchy.
Healthforce Superfoods is a company that produces a green powder, Vitamineral Green. Their process requires third-party, independent lab testing to verify that each ingredient is tested for pesticides and GMOs (genetically modified organisms). Additionally, all ingredients are lab tested for botanical identity, heavy metals, microbiological activity, and gluten.
They term their process as TruGanic sourcing; in other words, Healthforce Superfoods goes beyond the mere organic standard.
Here is a list of their production standards:
1. Certified Organic by Oregon Tilth
2. Certified Kosher by Orthodox Union
3. Vegan – no animal ingredients or testing
4. FDA registered, cGMP (current good manufacturing practices) compliant per FDA CFR 21 part 111 regulations
5. cGMP third-party registered and audited by NSF International
6. The facility is free of GMOs, pesticides, animal-sourced ingredients, irradiation, fillers, flow agents, and excipients.
7. Nontoxic, organic compliant, and biodegradable cleaning products
8. Recycled paper office and restroom products, comprehensive multi-use recycling program
9. Composting system in place for obsolete and unusable ingredients/ products
10. Organic-compliant, animal-friendly pest control program
11. All labels and marketing materials are printed on 100% post-consumer recycled paper and all packaging materials are fully reusable and/or recyclable.
12. The production area is a radio frequency-free zone (no microwaves, Wi-Fi, or cell phones permitted) and has electromagnetic radiation (EMF) mitigating technologies
Ingredients used by Healthforce Superfoods are either certified organic, wildcrafted (the practice of harvesting plants from their natural, or ‘wild’ habitat, primarily for food or medicinal purposes.), or naturally grown without pesticides. They test for 292 different pesticides, insecticides, fungicides, and herbicides. Lab tests must show zero detectable levels of contaminants. After an initial “TruGanic™ validation” of their ingredients, continued compliance is verified through annual finished product testing.
All products and ingredients are whole foods or whole food extracts free of fillers, flow agents, or excipients throughout the manufacturing process.
So, Healthforce Superfoods serves as an example of the painstaking process employed by the companies that produce the best green powder mixes on the market. There are many other green powders that are manufactured in such a diligent manner.
I Don’t Recommend Any Multi-Vitamin Pill
Simply put, multi-vitamins are synthetic products that provided all the risks of processed foods. They contain various additives and fillers. Most importantly, they’re not produced from real food. In essence, they’re useless.
I sued many different vitamin tablets prior to discovering green powders. There was not a discernible positive effect on my health. In fact, I was terribly unhealthy.
The purported benefits of a multi-vitamin should be obtained from real, organic, non-processed foods, which include green powders.
A large 2011 study of close to 39,000 older women over 25 years found that women who took them in the long term actually had a higher overall risk of death than those who did not. Moreover, many other doctors/researchers have claimed these tablets provide no benefit.
The one vitamin supplement that appears to provide a benefit is the Vitamin D. Vitamin D is derived from natural sunlight. During the winter months in a cold climate, Vitamin D pill could be a viable option.
Essentially, the body’s daily need requirement of Vitamins and Minerals should be obtained from food. Moreover, people should begin viewing Food as Medicine; in other words, view food in the light of preventing and curing disease.
Green Powders are Meal Replacements
Taken alone and mixed with water or perhaps blended with a banana and water, a green powder drink serves as a meal replacement. However, the powder can be blended in a Vitamix with many other superfoods.
These powders are not pleasing to the pallet; however, there are many options to mask the taste. Combining them with other healthy food is a good means of implementing new, healthier foods into a diet. Personally, after I began using green powders I became motivated to try different foods, such as beets, which otherwise would have never become a part of my diet.
Green Smoothie Recipe
Here is an example of a healthy green smoothie recipe which can include a teaspoon of a green powder mix, such as Vitamineral Green.
1 cup frozen mango chunks
1/2 cup frozen peach slices
a handful of kale (stems removed) or spinach
1–2 cups almond milk
1/2 inch slice of fresh ginger
sprinkle of cinnamon
honey to taste
I’d recommend buying a Vitamix. These blenders can blender anything into a smooth texture. They can even be used to create soups. Their blades have a lifetime guarantee. I purchased my Vitamix over a decade ago and currently the blade functions as good as new. It’s definitely the best purchase of my life.
This is just one example of a recipe. There are thousands of recipes that can include green powders and a wide variety of different superfoods and natural sweeteners such as honey or cinnamon.
Try Vitamineral Green
Vitamineral Green is arguably the best green powder supplement on the market. If you’re struggling with dietary habits and seeking a means of increasing nutritional consumption then Vitamineral Mineral would be a wise option to explore.
Generally, I blend a green powder with several other foods such as beets, carrots, spinach, assorted berries, and honey. I’ll include enough food that the batch typically lasts for several days or more. For example, my latest concoction provided a morning breakfast green drink for Sunday through Saturday; i.e. a full 7 days.
Either way, there is a good number of high-quality green powders on the market. Recently, I wrote an article citing my personal top ten.
I’d recommended replacing an unhealthy breakfast consisting of processed, sugar-laced cereal with a healthy morning smoothie. The first step on that path could be trying one of those 10 green powders on my list. Or, if you’re sold on Vitamineral Green then purchase that powder here.
Are green powders a waste of money? answer, no
Remember a pill can’t replace real food. Your good health is worth an extra bit of money.
