What is a Plant Based Diet

I’ve been using various Nutritional supplements since the mid-2000s.  Recently, I’ve become interested in different diet plans suited for a healthy lifestyle.  Often, I’ve heard or read people claiming that a plant-based diet is an optimum strategy for good health.  So, I’ve begun researching this topic and discovered a company that sells some supplements, recipes, diet plans, and books based on this philosophy.  I’ve signed up as an affiliate for a company called the Hallelujah Diet.  In this post, I’ll summarize their diet plan and then in an accompanying post I’ll review some of their products.

Their assertion is that a diet based on Biblical teachings comprises the best route for good health.  I’ve heard this from various circles over the years and the idea has intrigued me.

First, I’ll explain the basic precepts of a plant-based diet.

A Plant-Based Diet


A plant diet consists of foods derived from vegetables, grains, nuts, seeds, legumes, and fruits with minimal or no consumption of animal protein.  The motivation for adhering to this diet stems from its various health benefits.  For example. Scientific studies have demonstrated that a plant-based diet reduces the risk of various ailments such as type two diabetes and various cardiovascular diseases.  Another benefit is easier weight management.  Many people have successfully reduced their weight.  Ultimately, a plant-based diet tends to become a lifestyle, leading into areas of other health consciousness.

Moreover, a plant-based diet is restricted to whole-foods.  The term whole-foods traditionally describes non-processed natural food.  The food is free from additives and other artificial substances.  Whole food plant foods contain all the essential nutrients except for Vitamin B12.  Dairy, animal protein (especially fish), and cereal are sources of Vitamin B12.  Personally, I eat fish and occasionally use a Vitamin B12 supplement.

There are many claims of this being the best diet for cancer.

Whole Food Shopping List

Whole Grains:

barley, brown rice, teff, millet, wild rice, quinoa, amaranth, steel cut and rolled oats, whole wheat.

Occasionally, I create a porridge from chia seeds, flax seeds, corn meal, amaranth, millet, buckwheat, and quick oats.


adzuki, beans, black beans, black-eyed peas, chickpeas, fava beans, kidney beans, green beans, peas, mung beans, lentils, lima beans, pinto beans,


kale, collards, spinach, lettuces, parsley, cilantro, chards, bok choy, arugula

I include kale, spinach, and cilantro, in a drink concocted using a Vitamix

Roots or Tubers

all kinds of potatoes, onions, leeks, carrots, radishes, beets, garlic, ginger, turnips, daikon

I’ve included beets for many years in my healthy morning drink.  Recently, I’ve learned red sweet potatoes have outstanding healthy benefits

Other Veggies

squash, celery, brussels sprouts, cauliflower, mushrooms, asparagus, peppers, tomatoes, zucchini, sea vegetables

Carrots and celery are a staple in my morning healthy drink.

Fruit (fresh or frozen)

apricots, apples, bananas, berries, cherries, melons, mangoes, papayas, pineapple, grapes, kiwi, plums

Omega 3 Rich Seeds:

hemp seed, flaxseed, black seed, chia seed.

Seeds or oils are good options.  Currently, I’m using Hemp Oil and Black Seed Oil.


I recommend filtered water and/or herbal teas. I use reverse osmosis water from WholeFoods.  However, there are many viable water filters on the market.


A Company offering a Biblical plant-based Diet Plan

The Hallelujah Diet was created during the 1970s when Rev. George Malkmus was diagnosed with health problems.  Instead of following the doctor’s advice of traditional medical treatment, the Reverend consulted the Bible.  Genesis 1:29 has become the foundation of the company’s philosophy, “And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.”

And note Genesis 1:30, “And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to everything that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat: and it was so.”

In essence, a Biblical Diet is plant-based mixed with the consumption of fish and certain “clean” animals comprising a much lower percentage.


What is the benefit of raw food?

The main benefit often cited is that the enzymes and nutrients are left intact.  When food is cooked there is a danger of killing them.

Organic juice powders allow you to receive the full value of vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals that you may be missing in your food.

Moreover, many advocates of a raw food diet claim the following benefits:

  1. more energy.
  2. clearer skin.
  3. better digestion.
  4. weight loss.
  5. a lower risk of developing heart and cardiovascular disease.


Precepts of this Plant-based Diet

  1.   Eating a diet of mainly raw fruits and vegetables as ordained in various Bible passages.
  2.   Supplementation of nutrition through their various products.
  3.   Cleansing the body of toxins via their Fiber Cleanse, Note – I recently purchased the product as I’ve seeking a good Fiber supplement.
  4.   Once the detox occurs then the body can fully absorb vitamins and minerals from food.

Four-Step Process

  1. Consume primarily raw vegetables, fruits, nuts, and seeds; with an 85% raw to 15% cooked ratio.
  2.  Replace the toxins.  Food such as meat, dairy, white flour, sugar, and refined salt are manufactured with additives, preservatives, and artificial ingredients.  The Fiber cleanse helps relieve these toxins.
  3.  Juicing with their BarleyMax and Vegetable Juice, which will optimize the absorption of vitamins and minerals.
  4.   Supplementation to fill the gaps in nutrition; Vitamin B12, Vitamin D3/K2, Iodine, Selenium, DHA

Moreover, the company offers books, recipes, diet kits devoted to specific issues, and kitchen tools.  Recently, I purchased their Get Started Kit, which consists of a green barley grass powder, fiber powder, a recipe book, and an introductory DVD.  I am looking forward to receiving these simple dinner delicious recipes.


One Guy’s Opinion

I’ve closely followed a plant-based diet over the past decade, primarily through morning drinks blended with a Vitamix.  However, I do eat a good portion of chicken and/or salmon during my meals.  I’m a very lazy person so generally, I’ll go to Wholefoods for my meals, which is gathered from their hot and salad bars.

Lately, I’ve been trying to save money and rely less on Wholefoods.  I have minimal ability as a cook; however, it would be wise for me to expand my horizons.  I’ve become intrigued with the many organically based diet plans on the market.  Ideally, I’d like to find the best diet for cancer prevention.  So, the Hallelujah Diet will be the first of many plans that I’ll review on healthjim.com.
