Are green powders a waste of money?
That’s a question often directed towards anyone whos uses these organic powders as a meal replacement.
It’s a fair question and the logical thing would be skepticism.
Perhaps the answer lies in the question – What are the benefits of green superfood powder?
A person should analyze why they’re considering using an organic superfood powder or any supplement for that matter. Every person’s situation and needs are different but generally speaking, a daily teaspoonful of a green superfood powder should potentially anyone living in the western world.
Personally, I began using them as a means to begin supplementing what had once been a terrible diet lacking in nutrition. I had been a picky eater while a youth and teenager. Then, I became a lazy eater during my early adulthood.
My attitude towards my meals while joining the daily workforce: the quicker, the cheaper, the better. And that led to poor health and weight gain.
Perhaps, I can be an impulse buyer. So, I never asked – are green powders a waste of money? I simply viewed the potential benefits and gave them a shot.
Today, they’ve become a mainstay in my morning green drink breakfast.
Compensate for Poor Dietary Habits
While growing up, I fought with my parents whenever they wanted me to eat vegetables. I was beyond the stereotypical picking eating child. Besides corn and carrots, I refused to eat then I remember gagging on a piece of broccoli. Eventually, my mother grew so frustrated that I stopped seeing green vegetables on my plate for quite some time.
Reflecting on the past, I realize my early eating habits caused me some problems.
Recently, I viewed a message board post in which a mother was commenting that her teenage daughter refused to eat any vegetables. The mother was worried the daughter wasn’t receiving the required vitamins and minerals in her daily diet.
So, the mother bought an organic green superfood powder for her daughter. She didn’t mention the product or delve too much further into detail. Her main point was that the powder provided a viable option for compensating for her daughter’s poor eating habits.
The story caused some reflection for me. First, I realized that could have been an option for me while I was eating poorly during my childhood and teenage years. Also, the mother’s motivation for making the initial purchase was similar to mine.
Namely, a green superfood powder can be used to cover any nutritional deficiencies in a person’s diet. Frankly, the standard American diet is flawed as evidenced by an epidemic of obesity and disease.
Anyone who is concerned with their dietary habits can use a green drink powder as a springboard to better habits. Two years after buying the green powder, Enerfood, I bought a Vitamix and began making healthy morning smoothies, which always include a few teaspoons of organic superfood powder.
Ideally, everyone would have their own vegetable gardens but that isn’t the reality of the world in the 21st century. Until a person is able to achieve that level of self-sufficiency then is always the potential to benefit from the consumption of these superfood powders.
A related benefit is green powder’s convenience. The matrix has everyone running to and fro with little time to spare. The hectic mornings of rushing into horrible morning traffic to attend to my cubicle cause me to neglect breakfast.
My breakfast would typically consist of something out of the vending machine once I reached the office.
A teaspoon in a glass of water or mixed it in a Vitamix with a banana or a carrot and some flaxseeds and you’ll be drinking the healthiest breakfast possible for someone living a busy lifestyle.
My cookies and milk breakfasts ceased once upon placing an online order for Enerfood.
I’ve been on work projects that required travel for days, weeks and months. Often, it was difficult to eat completely healthy. However, I always kept a stash of organic superfood handy, either stored in my luggage or purchased after arriving in town.
So, green powders can serve as a sort of insurance policy if the flow of the day forces a person into rushing their meals at unsavory locations.
The human body requires a daily influx of vitamins and minerals. These nutrients can only be acquired via food. Therefore, someone seeking to live a healthier lifestyle or become healthier should be seeking to eat food abundant in these nutrients.
Again, eating organic superfood powders is an effortless means to inject these nutrients into the diet. Green powders are powdered forms of assorted vegetables and fruits processed in a manner that maintains the integrity of the nutrients and enzymes. Generally, these powders contain the daily recommended servings of 3 vegetables and 2 fruits.
There are many different opinions on diets; however, everyone agrees that eating green, leafy vegetables is necessary requirement for a healthy diet.
In a previous blog post, I offered a Vitamineral Green review. In my opinion, Vitamineral Green is the best organic superfood powder on the market. The list of Vitamineral Green ingredients is impressive and similar to many other green powders on the market.
Organic Superfood Powders Ingredients
To provide a demonstration of the nutritional value of an organic green drink powder I’ll mention some of Vitamineral Green’s ingredients.
Here is a list of the ingredients:
Nettle Leaf, Carob Pod, Alfalfa Leaf, Horsetail Leaf, Ginger Root
Barley Grass, Parsley Leaf, Wheat Grass, Basil Leaf, Barley
Grass Juice, Oat Grass Juice, Chickweed Leaf
Dandelion Leaf, Holy Basil Leaf, Moringa Leaf, Yacon Leaf,
Amla Berry, Shilajit, Spirulina, Chlorella, Kelp
Dulse, Bladderwrack, Alaria, Laver
Vitamineral Green ingredients are as impressive as any other powder on the market. Moreover, the powder is stored in a glass jar, which is a safer container than plastic. No unwanted chemicals and toxins will seep into the green powder like could possibly happen with a plastic container. Also, HealthForce Superfoods (manufacturer of Vitamineral Green) engages in a more intense vetting process in terms of food sources than the standard organic labeling.
In this section, I’d like to offer a few snapshots of some superfoods that are present in Vitamineral Green and most other organic superfood powders.
Spirulina and Chlorella
Spirulina is such a powerful superfood that Healthforce offers a powder focused on it. Spirulina Manna is another green powder that I’ve used in the past.
Spirulina is a member of the blue-green algae family; while chlorella is a member of the green algae family. These two algae strands are considered a tonic and rejuvenator. People often use them while engaged in a fast or a weight-loss regiment.
Spirulina and chlorella contain all of the amino acids, ample vitamins and minerals and large doses of chlorophyll, which as several health benefits, perhaps most notably chlorophyll benefits the blood by improving the quality of red blood cells.
Moreover, spirulina has a large amount of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA). There has been speculation that a high density of GLA accounts for reports of higher energy and mental alertness while using spirulina.
This is just a brief sketch of the benefits of these algae in order to provide a glimpse of the potential nutritional benefits offered by these organic superfood powders.
A detailed article may be written in the future concerning Spirulina and Chlorella. Send a comment at the bottom of the screen if that would be of interest and value.
Kelp is a brown alga noted for its high iodine content. People who desire to improve their thyroid function use iodine-rich supplements such as kelp.
Wheatgrass and barley grass are rich in chlorophyll and overall nutrient content. Many people have reported higher energy levels while consuming these grasses in liquid form. Moreover. they provide anti-cancer and anti-aging benefits.
A study in Japan demonstrated wheatgrass and barley grass offer protection from DNA damage caused by x rays and other cancer-causing chemicals.

A Fine Balance
Many other examples could be cited but the main point is that all of the foods in a superfood supplement such as Vitamineral Green offers numerous powerful health benefits.
The variety of foods in a green superfood powder can offer various benefits. Instead of taking multiple vitamin supplements for various concerns, someone can use a powder and attain varying benefits.
Furthermore, nutritionists often claim that there is a benefit in eating a variety of different in order to consume various vitamins and minerals. One teaspoon from a green powder in the morning and this daily goal will be attained.
Some green powders possess probiotics, while others do not. For example, Vitamineral Green and Enerfood do not possess any probiotics.
However, another highly acclaimed green powder, Green Vibrance, contains 25 billion probiotics within 12 strands of good bacteria.
Probiotic supplements began to become popular during the 1990s. The “good bacteria” of probiotics has a beneficial impact on the digestive tract. An entire ecosystem is located in the human digestive tract. There needs to be a balance of “good bacteria” to counter the “bad bacteria”.
A weak colony of the good bacteria can result in assorted ailments such as candida overgrowth and allergies. Many researchers have postulated such conditions in the digestive tract are the root cause of most diseases.
The key probiotic bacteria are bifidobacteria and lactobacilli. Both types of probiotic bacteria are contained in green powders such as Green Vibrance and Green Surge.
The three most important ones are lactobacillus acidophilus, bifidobacterium bifidum, and Streptococcus faecium. Green Vibrance and Green Surge contain the latter two strains but not the streptococcus faecium. However, both contain streptococcus thermophilus, which is considered a highly beneficial bacteria strain.
Note – don’t confuse these strains with streptococcus faecalis which is a potentially pathogenic bacteria.
Prebiotics are a related item occasionally found in an organic superfood powder. Prebiotics are considered food for the probiotics. They contain the nutrients needed by the bacteria in order to grow and thrive.
The Hallejuh Diet’s Advanced Superfood Organic Powder contains prebiotics in the form of fiber and vegetables.
So, there are different benefits associated with the various types of green powders. Through the years I have tried many different powders. All of the ones I’ve mentioned are green powders that I view with favor.
Check out my article citing my top 10 superfood powders. Vitamineral Green, Enerfood, Green Vibrance, Green Surge, and the Hallejuh Diet’s Advanced Superfood Organic Powder are included in this list.
For a more detailed expose on the body’s nutritional needs, check out this article. Essentially, deficiency in various vitamins and minerals can contribute to debilitating conditions and diseases.
The cumulative effect of eating a nutrient-dense diet has a positive effect on the human body. So, a daily teaspoon or two of a quality superfood powder can provide additional benefits.
1. Blood Sugar – Green powders can balance blood sugar levels. One recent study found green powders had a positive effect on the glucose levels and insulin response on 24 individuals with diabetes.
2. Brain Function – A study of 3,718 participants, aged 65 years or older concluded that high vegetable consumption may slow the rate of cognitive decline.
Note – the study did not conclude that fruit consumption provided the same benefit.
3. Heart Health – Another study tested the effects of a vegetable supplement drink on a group of 40 chiropractic students and faculty members.
The participants mixed the green powder into water and drank two glasses per day. The study determined the green powder had beneficial benefits on blood pressure.
4. PH level – A diet low in vegetable consumption and high in meats, fast food, alcohol, etc will cause the body to become acidic.
The typical habits in western society have caused an epidemic of acidity as demonstrated by conditions such as acid reflux. Cancer cells thrive in an acidic state.
Another study demonstrated a more akaline level in the urine of 34 subjects after using a plant-based supplement product for seven days.
These are a handful of the purported green powder benefits. The study is ongoing.
From experience, I feel I’ve attained many benefits from these green powder supplements.
Around the turn of the 20th century, the top-three causes of death in the United States were infectious diseases: pneumonia, tuberculosis, and diarrheal disease.
Today, the main killers are related to lifestyle choices: heart disease, cancer, and chronic lung disease. This shift from infectious disease to chronic disease has been accompanied by changes in dietary habits in the Western world.
In the past, malnourishment was the greatest cause of health problems; today high blood pressure is the most prominent signal of disease. The cause of high blood pressure can be attributed to overnutrition (or rather a diet consisting of too many healthy foods.
Chronic disease has become an epidemic as dietary habits have shifted towards meat products and processed foods. Meat, eggs, dairy, eggs, oils, soda, and refined grains have become the primary focus of the modern diet.
China is a case study that supports this viewpoint. Traditionally, Chinese people adopted a plant-based diet. They’ve shifted away from this practice. In turn, they’ve become introduced to the western epidemic of obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer.
Dietary Quality Index
In an effort to examine the relationship between chronic disease and diet, researchers developed the dietary quality index. This evaluation reflects the percentage of calories people derive from nutrient-rich, unprocessed plant foods on a scale of zero to one hundred.
The higher a person scores then the lower their risk of obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and high triglycerides. A related study demonstrated that women who scored higher were less likely to develop breast cancer.
The stark reality is that the American diet scores 11 out of 100. Animal meat and processed plant food dominate the American diet.
A minimum of 400 grams per day is the generally recommended daily intake of fruits and vegetables, which is roughly 5 servings per day. Note – many sources recommended ever more servings.
Dangers of Processed Foods
Furthermore, most people are eating processed food, which includes vegetables. So, even if someone eats vegetables they’re likely consuming unhealthy byproducts.
Here are a few reasons why processed foods (even vegetables) are unhealthy:
1, High in sugar and high– fructose corn syrup -a prolific breeding ground for heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and cancer
2. Processed to feed addiction – the chemicals in these foods stimulate the brain to want more and more; hence a bag of potato chips are empty 5 minutes after being opened.
3. Artificial ingredients are prevalent –
Highly processed foods often contain:
Preservatives: Chemicals that prevent the food from rotting.
Colorants: Chemicals that are used to give the food a specific color.
Flavor: Chemicals that give the food a particular flavor.
Texturants: Chemicals that give a particular texture.
4. Little Nutrient Value – moreover, often synthetic vitamins and minerals are added to compensate
5. High in Trans Fats – These foods contain hydrogenated oils that develop into unhealthy trans fats. These oils are another contributor to heart disease.
Hence, the last few sections describe the greatest of green powder benefits. The industrialization of the food industry has created poor food quality and terrible dietary habits. Green powders serve as a healthy alternative.
Best way to use a Green Superfood Powder
An effective use of green superfood powder is to include teaspoons in a Vitamix green smoothie. A Vitamix is a high-speed blender that can literally blend anything. The blades are lifetime guaranteed. Mine is in perfect condition after 12 years.
Blend the green powder with carrots, beets, apples, kale, etc. You’ll be able to create a super green drink containing all the daily required vitamins and minerals.
For example, I blended a beet, two apples, three carrots, a half bag of frozen blueberries, strawberries, and blackberries. I included three teaspoons of green superfood powder, two teaspoons of flaxseed, two teaspoons of chia seed, a teaspoon of collagen powder, and some honey.
This concoction was my breakfast this morning. The remainder should serve as my breakfast for the next several days.
Lastly, ideally there wouldn’t be a need for green superfood powder. However, conditions in the world are imperfect and we’ve been forced to adjust.
My family had a history of poor habits and conditions like heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes. At the age of 33, I was on route to a similar fate as my relatives.
However, I decided to make a real effort to live a healthier lifestyle. Purchasing an organic superfood powder was one of the first steps in this process.
